MeBeam Integration |
| Submitted By anlumo |
DescriptionDuring all our work on integrating audio and video into Adium, it seems that a company called MeBeam was way ahead of us. They implemented a cross-platform, protocol-agnostic videochat solution using Flash. The best of all: They allowed us to integrate with their service! What this means is that starting today, Adium has support for videochat! MeBeam has very compelling features:
What do you have to do to make use of it? First, you need a webcam obviously, and a headset is recommended. Then, download the plugin and double-click it, so Adium can place it into the right location. Relaunch Adium, and you're good to go. When you want to videochat with someone, ctrl-click (or right-click) them and choose "Initiate MeBeam Videochat". That's all! ChangesVersion 1.1Added a space between the URL and the exclamation mark to avoid URL parsing issues with certain clients. Updated for Adium 1.3! This also means that this plugin no longer works in older versions of Adium (sorry!). CommentsYou can reply to individual comments by clicking the "Reply" link next to each. # by simphax on 11/09/07 at 12:09:27I really hope this isn't the final solution :( . It is not that practical using a webbrowser to chat. I don't like this.
# by anlumo on 11/09/07 at 12:16:40It will definitely stay in Adium as a kind off fallback when regular iChat-like video chat doesn't work for whatever reason (wrong client, bad network, etc). However, we haven't stopped our project for a full implementation.
# by JCole on 11/09/07 at 17:07:36this is kind of embarrasing, you guys arent trying hard enough to make adium better. im thinking og goin back to adium it used to be so cool but when u do stuff like this it just makes u look kind of non prefessional. and this plug in sucks by the way.
# by csquared on 11/09/07 at 17:23:23Speaking of embarrassing, it helps to read both the description and the previous comments before posting hastily.
This serves as a nice temporary workaround until the real thing is working at full-speed. # by kormoc on 03/07/08 at 18:35:21Speaking of embarrassing, it helps to write proper English rather then 'kiddy' speak ('u' rather then 'you').
# by wex on 08/22/09 at 20:52:41As someone with a pet peeve for proper English usage, I completely agree with you, and I find substitutions such as "u" for "you" annoying.
However, since you did take the time to comment that it helps to write proper English, I feel compelled to point out your error for your benefit. "Then" refers to a sequence of events, something happens chronologically. Example: "I read your comment, then I replied to it." "Than" refers to a either/or situation. Something happens, or else something else happens instead. Both things do not happen. Example: "I liked your comment more than the previous comment which had many typos." (The event that did happen was me liking your comment at some level. The event that did not happen was me liking the other comment at the same level.) Don't take this in a bad way. If you were using "then" because you thought it was correct (as so many obviously do, as compared to simple typos) and now that you know the right way, that is a good thing. I wouldn't have bothered wasting any time on this if I thought you wouldn't want to know the right way because you didn't care about using proper English. Wex # by kevindosi on 11/09/07 at 18:54:05damn.
i agree, but i'm sure this is just a stepping stone that we can use until AV chat gets better integrated with adium. # by slynoxfox on 11/09/07 at 20:26:04I haven't had the chance to try it yet but I think it's awesome that this was made availible to us while we wait for something better.
# by mathuaerknedam on 11/10/07 at 09:56:48Why do people complain when someone give them an option!?
I think it's great. A friend installed it and IM'd me. I didn't install it, but I received an invite to VV chat in Adium. Who cares if it's not integrated? I didn't have to do anything and I got to play. # by Berzerker101 on 11/10/07 at 11:42:04Seriously guys. You people don't think the Adium devel team works hard enough? They've got enough on their hands with the whole Leopard bug fixing and such. They are working on native integration, you people just need to shut the f*** up and stop complaining. You guys are lucky that you have anything at all.
# by anlumo on 11/10/07 at 11:56:31Note that this plugin was developed by myself in a single evening only. This did not interfere in any way with the planned A/V implementation.
# by caletz on 11/10/07 at 14:21:13how can i help, to make it more, user friendly, and kinda better! with some interface, and buttons, and illustrations, icons? tell me what you need, and i can help, anyway, this is my website, www.controllevel.com , or just mailme!
# by donsherio on 11/10/07 at 15:38:14I agree this is a pretty good temporary solution. Its better than having to either use another client, or force your friends to sign up for Stickam.com video chat. And I hope to see the Dev Team come up with the final, full A/V solution very soon. I know its a lot of work, and its very nice that someone else went and mashed up a quick backup plan for all of us who are in need of it. Kudos to both of you and ignore the ignorant people who haven't fully read the page and comments and are already complaining that they don't like it or are under some assumption that its the final version. Until the final version comes out, this will do just fine, and Im glad we now have an option thats semi integrated with adium. Good Job you guys.
# by ramcosca on 11/10/07 at 16:44:35Thanks for the effort guys, but not for me.
How can I uninstall the plugin? It doesn't appear on the Adium Xtras manager. # by cockroachman on 11/10/07 at 17:37:44Works beautifully - kudos to the adium team - I can finally
see my kids who are away at college. I am not a computer techie, so I simply don't understand, what everyone is complaining about. This is probably the most logical and pain free way to give everyone video and audio - something we have been wanting for ages - now that we have it - we're still not happy. You just can't please some people. # by iMacMikeG3 on 11/11/07 at 11:45:51How did you get it to work? I "right clicked" my friend and me-beam did not show up. Plug-in is installed in the right place and I can IM him, but no sound or video. Can you tell me what processor you have and what type of computer?
# by nathankorny on 11/10/07 at 17:59:29#(*@@ Fantastic! IMHO sound quality kills SKYPE -
My folks and I just had a video call - any they were blown away. They literally put SKYPE in their trashcan, and are going stick to Adium. Watch the word spread.... # by anlumo on 11/10/07 at 19:03:43You can uninstall it by deleting the file mebeamIntegration.adiumPlugin from Library/Application Support/Adium 2.0/Plugins/ in your home folder.
# by jonathan91 on 11/11/07 at 09:05:08can you use the built-in iSight in the Mac? because I tried this plug-in but i didn't got it to work. someone that can help me??
my e-mail is: jonathan__101@hotmail.com # by jhdesign on 12/17/07 at 23:27:45i had the same problem with my iSight but it is easily fixed. just click on the 'settings' link on the top right of the page. A dialog box appears with audio settings. There is a webcam icon in the bottom of the dialog box, clicking this will bring up a menu where you can choose your webcam input. Choose 'USB Video Class Video' if it is not already selected. Hope this helps.
# by iMacMikeG3 on 11/11/07 at 11:41:24Plug-in shows up, but I right click on my friends and nothing shows up that indicates I can video/audio chat with them. No "Initiate MeBeam Videochat" or anything else to indicate it is working. What is the problem? What are the system requirements? This is very disappointing, but will wait for Adium to make there own.
# by anlumo on 11/11/07 at 11:43:28Theoretically, the plugin should work fine in at least 10.3+ (even though Adium itself doesn't). Adium 1.1.x is required. Make sure you relaunch Adium after installing the plugin.
# by iMacMikeG3 on 11/11/07 at 12:09:16Well, I have a iMac G3 700mhz with os 10.4.10 running on it. The Adium is 1.1.4 and I did relaunch twice, but nothing. Oh well, I guess it just does NOT work on macs, at least ones of my vintage. Adium please hurry with your answer to audio/video chat.
Thank you for such a rapid reply. # by Nieves on 11/11/07 at 21:44:48PLEASEEEEEEEEE someone help meeee
I downloaded it and it says it is sucesfuly downloaded when I click on my name ...for I am the only one connected.... I old down the control key and I type -click nothing happen why??? # by Nieves on 11/11/07 at 21:45:31ALSO when people are not connected I just see the msn logo why not their photo
# by desk003 on 11/12/07 at 02:21:27sweet!
though, i must say, i can't wait for it to be integrated. But, I really like this as well.. very nice especially for people who don't have IM. # by Znajder on 11/12/07 at 12:36:35What the f*ck is wrong with you people!?
Some person decides to do a nice plugin to temporary solve something that a lot of people have been asking for, video chat. If you don't like it, just don't use it. Nobody's forcing you to. Why the h*ll do you need to complain so much about it? Yes, you didn't like it, and that must ofcourse mean that it's total crap, right? Coz your opinion is the only one that counts, right? nobody else can find it useful if you don't find it good enough for your needs... idiots... seriously... if you find this so bad then WHY THE H*LL DON'T YOU DO SOMETHING BETTER YOURSELF? Stop whining and complaining and solve the problem yourself or keep your mouth shut you ungrateful idiot! Oh i forgot.. you probably don't know sh*t about programming or what it takes to write this functionality..... You prefer to sit there on your sorry *ss and whine.. loser.. # by leamanc on 11/12/07 at 12:51:22My god, I have never seen a bigger bunch of whiners. The Adium folks are "not working hard enough" to provide you a free product??!??
No, this is not ideal, but I commend the Adium team for using it as a stop-gap measure until the final VC integration is done. # by stevesol on 11/12/07 at 19:48:42Intrusive plug in... It grabs control of my Logitech 9000 camera and will not let go until I restart the computer. Quitting Adium or logging out and in are not enough. No other app can use my camera until I restart. This is a problem. The plug in now resides in my trash can.
# by anlumo on 11/12/07 at 19:59:40This is not related to Adium at all. You have to close the mebeam web page in your browser to regain control of your web cam. Works fine with my iSight here.
# by stevesol on 11/12/07 at 21:08:50I'm not sure I follow. I never even got to a web page. I simply installed the plug in, restarted Adium, saw that I could control click on a buddy (but didn't), quit Adium, and lost control of my camera. My other apps like iChat and Photo Booth complained that the camera was in use by another application. Since the ONLY thing I did was install the plug in, it seems pretty suspicious to me that the plug in was the issue. I'm using a Logitech 9000 camera with the universal driver built into OS X. Maybe this is handled differently that the iSight driver.
# by anlumo on 11/12/07 at 21:11:21The plugin does not contain any code related to video features, it just opens a URL in the default web browser, so just installing the plugin can not have any effect on your webcam. Maybe you just didn't notice the browser window?
# by surf4life on 11/13/07 at 19:25:53anlumo,Thank you very much for all your work here for us Adium users. I am new to this, but am very impressed with Adium. I have a powerbook, running Adium 1.1.4,on OS 10.4, and want to view my friends video.I have installed MeBeam plugin. I have no camera,i just want to view my friends video stream. Also, right clicking is not an option for me,as i only have trackpad. She will use Yahoo Messenger ,windows xp,to send me viddeo stream. Is this possible for me to view her through MeBeam, and is it the best scenario for us? thanks you inn advance for your advice.Aloha,Tommy
# by anlumo on 11/13/07 at 19:32:57Yes, this should be possible. As mentioned in my description, you can use ctrl-click instead of a right click to open the context menu.
# by surf4life on 11/13/07 at 20:13:23anlumo, Thats way cool.Would I get a better video/audio quality from her if she used another client, other than YM....or installed the MeBeam plugin herself. Hope these questions arent too redundant for you. I am just looking for highest quality scenario for our conferencing. Also, though I have no camera, would like to speak to her via audio stream.Have a built-in mic in PBook. My last question for you today, I promise!.....)).....Aloha,Tommy
# by anlumo on 11/14/07 at 01:59:29It does not matter what client she uses, since the actual videochat happens via the web browser. Your setup might work, but it could cause some audio feedbacks, since the PowerBook's microphone is right next to the speaker (I don't know why Apple designed it like that, that's a very bad idea). A headset would be better.
# by Dkkaw on 11/14/07 at 13:56:13Hi all. I'm writing to let you know that the plugin keeps crashing my copy of Adium. I have v. 1.0.6 (OS 10.3.9). I am not sure if you guys want or need any particular specs of other plugins I have. Let me know.
-Doug # by srnowacki on 11/18/07 at 00:55:46I can't seem to download it. I clicked Install and it did asked about launching Adium to install it and I let it go, but on restarting Adium I don't see anything on the Ctrl-Click menu or anywhere else. If I click on Download it takes me to a text page that says only admins and such can download that file. Is this true? I'd like to try it out.
-ScottN # by thezoed on 11/18/07 at 13:03:44Crashes on 10.5 Couldn't even click the option "Disable" Had to go to: Users->User->Library->Application Support->Adium->Plugins->mebeamIntegration.AdiumPlugin
and delete it manually. Adium worked after deleting it. # by thezoed on 11/18/07 at 13:04:27(that was for Adium 2.0)
# by anlumo on 11/18/07 at 15:36:24There is no Adium 2.0. The current version is 1.1.5, the version in development is 1.2.
Could you mail me the crashlog? I can't reproduce this here, and I can't look into it without that log. My email address is am -AT- adiumx.com # by pafmax on 11/18/07 at 19:40:40Iīve been using this for a while and I must say to the developer... Thank you!
I know itīs not native, nor the *best* solution for Adium A/V, nor even Adiumīs solution for A/V, but itīs a great effort and it works pretty well. Besides, itīs not dependent on the IM network, so I can do videochats with my Gmail buddies! Iīd really like to see a popup window within Adium using Webkit instead of opening a new browser window, though. But anyway, Iīm really looking forward for the development of this plugin! And thanks again anlumo for making it available! P.S. To people like Mr. JCole: If you donīt like it and have complains about it, learn how to criticize and HELP by providing USEFUL feedback, not just whining... # by rasmus on 11/23/07 at 08:24:34Great idea, Horrible implementation.
Flash in a web browser is probably the worst solution I've ever heard of. Much easier to just switch over to iChat when needing video conference, as iChat now days support XMPP. # by Niles on 11/29/07 at 02:10:28this would be greatly improved if, instead of opening in safari, it opened up a little webkit window inside adium. people with fast computers would barely notice the difference and it sure would be a hell of a lot cleaner. i bet there would be a lot more appreciation from this ungrateful bunch if exactly the same solution was implemented cleaner.
# by el_G on 12/04/07 at 17:11:20This works great! Seems a lot more solid than iChat AV. It works with iSight, you just have to change the Flash camera settings to USB for it to see you. Thanks!
# by ghuerto@gmail.com on 12/13/07 at 23:34:39can you please let me know on how to uninstall this meBeam plugin on my adium !!!! thanks.
# by bassman92 on 12/15/07 at 14:11:21this is not good at all, yes it works but it works very poorly
# by jhdesign on 12/17/07 at 23:33:17As a temporary fix I think it's a great solution. The implementation is much better than Mercury messenger and it doesn't eat up much CPU either. If this is the temporary answer, I can't wait to see the finished AV project. While it isn't perfect, it is by far the best webcam support for an MSN account.
# by Anarco on 12/17/07 at 16:27:20...Me I'm very happy of that, congratulations and THANKS ! (not a frequently word I see)
# by MacKevG on 12/25/07 at 23:48:36Works great !
I love it ! The only thing that I dont like, is that it takes 110% CPU on a brand-new MacBook. I dont know if that is usual for videochats, since I never tried one in iChat yet, because I just got the MacBook # by thebevster on 12/27/07 at 17:53:03Great work! this is a great plugin and i don't know why so many people are complaining. THIS IS ONLY A TEMPORARY FIX!!! i'm sure the people at adium are working hard to get A/V fully integrated into adium. Until the A/V release, this will be a good fix for some people.
# by jodermc on 01/01/08 at 20:32:38i absolutely love this plugin! although the first time i tried it people could message me, but i couln't see my contact list. this was fixed when i restarted adium though. keep up the good work!
# by WhatTheBleep on 01/12/08 at 00:44:31I'm a fan. Despite the lack of complete integration, I'm satisfied with MeBeam as a solution for the short-term! Before MeBeam, I had no way of using any protocol other than AIM (via iChat AV), so now I've got options.
Unfortunately, MeBeam doesn't recognize my webcam. I'm thinking this is because I'm using 3rd party drivers for it that basically are installed as a QuickTime plug-in. I'm guessing that MeBeam doesn't look in my system for that kind of plugin (and instead looks for drivers that are default to my system). Bummer, but I'll wait, and hopefully when MeBeam gets updated or when Adium has full AV implementation, I will be able to use my Quicktime plugin drivers to use my webcam. Thanks for all your hard work! # by archerkat85 on 01/22/08 at 00:03:16I think there is something seriously wrong with my adium. Not sure if it has to do with mebeam, but it crashes constantly, and for every im exchanged by either party, the IM notification sound goes off about five times. Also, growl is incredibly delayed. The popup occurs way before the sound goes off. I have the most updated version of adium, so i'm not sure what's wrong.
# by HuskerMn on 02/27/08 at 18:20:22I can't seem to get it to invoke the video at all.
I don't see any settings, just the regular preferences stuff. Am I supposed to launch MeBeam from Safari before connecting to Adium or something? Thanks much. # by ashe613 on 04/19/08 at 13:58:43Due to a change in how mebem works, we now all get redirected to the same page, becuase it looks at ...meabeam.com/adiumx.php?... as the adiumx.php room, and it doesn't parse the variables, meaning everyone who is using adium uses the same room. could this be changed to remove the adiumx.php?... watever and just change it to the multi-digit code instead to retain privacy?
i now just have to use a different chatroom when i want to speak to ppl, of which i use my web username (not this one, i have a more recent one) thanks # by blackc2004 on 04/29/08 at 12:29:04Does this plugin work? I installed it today and then tried going to the mebeam website and it appears to not work.
Thanks! # by anlumo on 05/05/08 at 22:20:37Thank you for your reports, I've informed the mebeam developers, please report again if you have any further troubles.
# by sartxmuida on 05/10/08 at 05:45:35Does not work anymore.
I installed it from this page, relaunched Adium, got the into panel, but no menu or button to use it. It is not listen in my Xtras nor in the Plugins folder, so I downloaded it and put it there but still nothing. It used to work with an earlier version of Adium. # by pcperini on 06/04/08 at 20:34:58Not quite working, friend. Though, I am running on the SVN, but that shouldn't make a huge difference, should it? Anyway MeBeam does work, so that's not the problem. If you could contact me at any of my contacts (http://www.adiumxtras.com/index.php?a...er_id=15815), with some suggestions, I'd appreciate it.
# by sartxmuida on 06/08/08 at 20:24:03Is there a shortcut ? I was cleaning my keyboard and it sent an invitation.
# by Dewdman42 on 06/20/08 at 17:15:57Boy I sure hope Adium will consider doing a real video solution. This solution sucks and didn't work the first time I tried it and I don't plan to try it again.
# by robiti on 08/26/08 at 04:48:33hello ppl! can anybody help me, i upgraded adium to the 1.3 version i wanted to upgrade the mebeam plug in too, but it s impossible to download it and when i try to install it, i have a message where i have to chose an application to run it ( i tried adium but it does not work ) , thank you.
# by anlumo on 08/27/08 at 04:08:15I'm sorry, I can't quite follow. What's your issue?
# by robiti on 08/27/08 at 04:11:18it just does not allow me to download it, if i click i get this message :Unable to Download
An error occurred: Only the submitter, mods and admins are allowed to download Xtras before they are approved. and when i try just to install it it asks me to use an appication, but i dont know wich one! # by papopato on 08/27/08 at 04:09:45Thanks, this is genius!
Unfortunately it says Unable to Download An error occurred: Only the submitter, mods and admins are allowed to download Xtras before they are approved. # by jhimm on 09/11/08 at 10:45:18major flaw with this application -- when mebeam.com goes down (as it is right now) the service (obviously) doesn't work.
yahoo IM and other mainstream IM clients have built in video chat. i realize that mimicking iChat would be nice, but if its taking so long, aren't there other solutions out there which might be easier to replicate? after all, won't replicating iChat mean i can still only video chat with friends who are on Mac computers who have iChat? sadly, most of my friends aren't on Macs and they find it hysterical that i can't video chat with them via the usual mechanisms. "so 20th century" they say. # by anlumo on 09/11/08 at 18:51:13Well, going from "some video chat" to iChat-type features is actually pretty easy (esp. with Core Animation and other features of Leopard). The hard part is getting video chat to work in the first place.
There has been some progress on it on Google Summer of Code, but as far as I know, it's far from being ready to ship. # by jess44 on 09/22/08 at 20:03:29ok i have a question...i install this aduim im thing on my mac...it works but wen i i went to install the video feature i cant use it because macs dont have a right click button....how can I get this feature to work??? i need this because my ichat doesnt work
# by tlmurray on 10/13/08 at 12:59:26I use Adium as a replacement for Lotus Sametime. Does MeBeam with an external FireWire iSight and 10.4.11 not work in this situation? Sametime (horribly) supports video on Mac, but in Adium, when I right-click a contact I do not see an option for "Initiate MeBeam Videochat".
# by johnnyboy on 10/13/08 at 19:20:36I have been using adium with mebeam for the past 4 months and its been working perfect...today I installed teh latest version of adium and for some reason now the mebeam does not work at all, are when I try to go to the mebeam homepage it will not even load...does anyone know if there is a problem with mebeam?
# by whorestar on 12/12/08 at 01:03:17mebeam is NOT audio/video for adium. it's a web browser p.o.s. java program.
yahoo's own messenger is notorious for being bloatware but they have had audio/video for years. even on the mac version of yahoo's own messenger. hop to it. give me something real. # by Stibble on 01/15/09 at 13:21:22Hmmm. Trying this out on an imac G5, 10.4.11 adium 1.3.2. Downloaded and installed the plugin fine - shows up in xtras manager but NO option in cntrl-click menu ? Restarted adium and whole mac but nothing. I read what el-G said about changing settings but, despite being a fairly seasoned mac-user I have no idea which settings he means ? Nothing in Safari prefs, adium prefs or System prefs seems to relate to his comments (external iSight here). What am I missing ? Do I have to manually go to the mebeam website and do something first ? Thx and thx for doing this.
# by Stibble on 01/16/09 at 08:01:03Oh I have sorted it out - when you first install it asks whether you want to avoid crashes and if you it disables it - leaving a greyed out version in the xtras manager. Just reinstall and dont be so eager to click before thinking (me).
# by lalalakers24 on 06/01/09 at 23:11:09i really think Adium would be absolutely PERFECT if we could also log-on to our ooVoo account...
# by evildevil on 06/18/09 at 13:32:03I have a problem download this plugin. When I try to download I only get a message that the key is incorrect and that i should fix it. What do I wrong? When I push the button install adium only starts but dont install it.
# by wingslasher911 on 08/16/09 at 16:40:19I'm having a bit of a microphone problem. My friend uses pidgin and I can hear and see him, but it turns out that while he can see me, he can't hear me. How to fix this?
# by BadCRC on 11/21/09 at 02:09:04Hello,
i use Snow leopard 10.6.2 and adium 1.3.8 and when i try to initiate a mebeam conversation, there is a problem. The link address appears to contain "adiumx.php?" like in : http://www.mebeam.com/adiumx.php?adi_...593153054AE and because of that it doesn't work at all: i have to take off adium.php? to make it work. Is there anybody else that have the same problem? Best regards Post a New CommentYou must be logged in to post comments. |
