Submitted By Caius Durling (iNemo)

Upon the script command %_brb (See footnote) the contact is sent a brb - xxxxx message. xxxx is replaced by a totally unbelievable reason for going away. Just a little joke script I made to spice up brb messages...

I've moved all the reasons and the how-to edit them to my website page -- Link

I'm always on the lookout for new brb reasons. Anyone that cares to submit more is very welcome to. Link

If you wish to edit the script once you've installed it, that is possible, please goto the /brb page on my website to see how -- Link

Footnote: /brb still works for legacy reasons, but I've also included %_brb so you can use it within a name, Caius - %_brb for example

v0.7 - 2007-02-04
  • Added %_brb as a trigger
  • Corrected a grammatical error (Scott Paeth)
  • Added new reasons (BlackDalek, Bob MacGregor and Greg Larsen, edsq)

To see the rest of the changelog please visit my /brb page -- Link

# by Anonymous on 04/21/05 at 04:28:08

pretty sweet

# by sdh on 04/21/05 at 10:23:57

# by iNemo on 09/30/05 at 14:37:58

# by iNemo on 04/22/05 at 15:59:32

Theres about 10 at the minute, I am in the process of writing more and adding them in.

# by iNemo on 09/30/05 at 14:38:15

Make that a lot more (Updated :))

# by Ji_ on 04/24/05 at 14:36:43

cute, but just barely... great idea, should be more borderline offensive imo. :P

# by iNemo on 04/24/05 at 17:36:20

Submit some more to me then ;) inemo {at} mac {dot} com

# by GCK on 04/26/05 at 09:00:30

This shit is awesome, really awesome. My favourite so far.

# by on 04/26/05 at 13:54:10

Haha, wicked stuff, installing now.

# by dcentity2000 on 05/01/05 at 18:16:22

5 ducks!

# by ED228 on 05/02/05 at 15:50:24

Looks good, but can you put up a screenshot or give an example of one of the away messages, so I (and others) can see what it is like before actually downloading it?
Looks awesome though.

# by iNemo on 09/30/05 at 14:38:40

Listed them all in the description for you and others :)

# by anna on 05/03/05 at 20:16:43

i veto the idea of borderline offensive stuff, (or at least cussing), i don't like to cuss or be really vulgar, and so if something came up like that, it'd be kinda awkward

# by Symeon on 10/06/05 at 17:13:03

I agree with that. I'd love to get something that is funny without beeing either vulgar or in any sense offensive.

# by Casey on 07/24/05 at 16:52:58

Anyway to have this run off of a text file with each message on a new line? That way we could put our own messages in?

# by iNemo on 09/30/05 at 14:37:37

If you want to download it and edit it, feel free :)

# by allyboodevil on 09/13/05 at 22:50:11

haha thats brilliant!

# by 61Tipo61 on 10/02/05 at 20:50:37

The first version was great. This one just plain rocks.

# by candice on 10/06/05 at 17:45:24

This doesn't seem to be working for me. :(
Whenever I try it, all that shows up as my away message is /brb.

# by candice on 10/06/05 at 17:47:31

# by iNemo on 10/06/05 at 17:53:25

As I'm sure you just discovered, when you set /brb as your away message, it shows up as /brb in the status window (that you see.)

Rest assured though, when someone types and adium replies to them, it does execute the /brb command and reply with a brb - xxxxx reason like it should do :)

# by Félix on 10/06/05 at 22:09:13

Nice! :D
5 ducks for this ! :D

I think it's ok like that, it doesn't need to be offensive to be funny...

# by Marc on 10/16/05 at 21:48:46

Its easy to add your own or take out ones you dont like...

right click or control click on the downloaded file, which should be "brb.Adiumscripts" and click "show package contents" then open the folder "Contents" then the folder "Resources" the file inside "brb.scpt" will open with the script editor application and if you add messages following the same format and then click compile and re-add it to adium you will have made all the desired changes

# by iNemo on 10/17/05 at 02:28:47

Thanks for that explanation marc. Yes that is indeed what you do to add more scripts. feel free (adium is open source after all!)

# by Marc on 10/18/05 at 12:43:25

I figured it was the easiest way to end the clean / offensive debate on the what content appears.

# by MacvashX on 11/05/05 at 14:20:01

Hey That's great! ^^

I have a little problem....
I already had the old version, I donwloaded the new one but I don't see anything more, The same brb message always appear T_T

How to change it?

(I'm not sure that changig the script by myself is a good idea @_@)

Thanks ^^

# by mooneyj on 11/07/05 at 21:12:05

This script is freaking awesome. I need more responses, but am tooooo lazy to write them myself (also not funny enough). Please satisfy my need for random excuses.

# by Eddy on 11/09/05 at 10:10:01

Hi, I've a done a quick translation of your script in french, you can get it here

# by Eddy on 11/09/05 at 10:11:07

# by wakeskateal on 11/13/05 at 19:17:28

Is there any way someone can make a script where you go something like /brb{ill be back in a minute} and then have your away message be that which is displayed in the {}. Making it quick to put on an away message without having to go to menu and so forth. If someone could pull that off that would be amazing.

# by epl18 on 11/17/05 at 06:52:15

If you just go to status--> custom... it lets you. I think that would be faster than a script

# by Diatribe on 11/19/05 at 10:22:58

Though it doesn't yet let you choose custom status messages it does set your status... try my script:
Custom aways are something I am thinking about.

# by Diatribe on 11/28/05 at 17:04:24

A new version that lets you set a custom away has been uploaded and should be approved shortly.
For now it is only custom aways and availables, I might add custom brb messages but I think custom aways should suffice.

# by Diatribe on 11/28/05 at 17:07:36

Working link:

BTW, iNemo I have responded to your mail. :)

# by Eagle on 11/29/05 at 01:50:20

dude, lmfao. This is the best Xtra ive got so far!!!!

# by lyv23 on 01/26/06 at 20:32:19

Mine is all in french and i can't fix it.

Downloaded french to see what was like after LOVING the english one.

PS i speak almost NO french..

# by iNemo on 01/27/06 at 10:48:15

I didn't do the french translation, but the person that did obviously left the version number/title the same so adium doesn't see it as an upgrade.

Delete the brb script from ~/Library/Application Support/Adium 2.0/Scripts/ and then download/install the english one (from the top of this page) again.

# by schalliol on 01/27/06 at 04:55:12

I'm new to Adium, but just installed this and this is great

# by Félix on 02/05/06 at 14:17:29

5 Ducks, really nice :D

# by macluvjay on 02/12/06 at 23:09:28

I have "/brb" set as one of my away messages. When I set my universal away message to "/brb", I have reports from friends that the message changes every minute or so causing HUGE gaps of random sayings between me going away and coming back to continue a convo. Is there a way to change how often the message is changed, or is my setup flawed?

# by iNemo on 02/13/06 at 06:11:15

I'm not quite sure what you mean, think I understand though. My script does nothing on its own. All it does is return a phrase when adium calls it. Sounds like adium is calling it too much?

# by macluvjay on 02/13/06 at 21:12:06

yea, i just upgraded to v 0.89, so we'll see how it goes

# by SpringKS on 01/02/07 at 02:15:24

I'm having the same problem, I think. The /brb message works great for the contact lists. But it keeps posting new away messages every 30 sec. in the conversation window of the person I've been chatting with (GTalk).

Other than that little problem, I think it's great!

# by therif on 03/23/06 at 13:16:02

My favourite script!!!

# by simplebeep on 03/27/06 at 20:05:14

# by saucey on 07/05/06 at 17:07:20

Love the script. Very funny.

Not picking, just pointing out...

"Busy planing how to take over the world"

should be

"Busy planning how to take over the world"

# by iNemo on 07/05/06 at 20:07:48

Good observation, I'll correct that sometime.

# by iNemo on 07/24/06 at 08:34:36

Corrected. Welcome to v0.5!

# by greatcaffeine on 09/04/06 at 03:39:13

5 ducks! It's hilarious!

# by PishtheFish on 09/09/06 at 21:12:54

Very funny script; I love it! Just one thing...

"Funny you should write me just now, I just /happen/ to on my way out."

It should be: "Funny you should write me just now, I just /happen/ to be on my way out."

But I love it!

# by iNemo on 09/19/06 at 19:07:07

Someone else emailed me with this correction amongst others. Consider it corrected as of v0.6!

"[second message]", ¬
"[(n-1)th message]", ¬

# by slightdiffusion on 12/20/06 at 03:59:57

when i set up my away message with "/brb" all that is responding is the standard "be right back"

# by scott_karana on 01/05/07 at 01:56:24

Do you mind fixing the spelling error I found?
"It's fear of water" should be "Its".

# by msmercury on 01/05/07 at 03:32:44

You are correct about that.

# by Erre on 01/08/07 at 12:55:21

Hello, I'm new in adium, where do I type /brb for this?

# by edsq on 01/12/07 at 21:13:02

um......... how come i cant open AdiumScripts in Script Editor?
bye the way, you type /brb in the same place you type text.

# by edsq on 01/12/07 at 22:01:14

no.... let me change that. HOW DO I MAKE MY APPLESCRIPT WORK IN ADIUM????????

# by lightxs on 03/31/07 at 20:17:15

You're better off than I am? I barely know how to make an applescript like this one! I've been trying to make a "g2g" applescript similar to this one, but I'm getting nowhere! Absolutely NOWHERE! At least you have an applescript that works!!!!

# by edsq on 01/13/07 at 11:33:03

I really need help. BAD!

# by edsq on 01/13/07 at 11:52:38

ive got a brb message:

"Must have Brains!", ¬

i dont think its very good, but tell me if you like it.

# by edsq on 01/13/07 at 11:54:37

OOhh! OOhh! Another one!

"You don't want to know." , ¬

# by iNemo on 02/04/07 at 22:03:21

0.7 is released with new reasons!

# by drbobguy on 02/05/07 at 02:59:04

I've got a message, what do you guys think?

"brb - edsq is a douchebag.", ¬

# by drbobguy on 02/06/07 at 02:00:16

Okay, ignore that last one. Can I delete that somehow? Sorry edsq.

# by BlackandWhitePenguin on 02/17/07 at 03:03:28

Congratulations on #1 on the whole site! This is WAY better then Renkoo (totally overrated).

# by iNemo on 02/17/07 at 08:31:23

Planned for v1.0 is an easier way to add custom brb reasons, a way to have explicit reasons filtered out & some new reasons hopefully!

Also a proper part of my website for it.

# by adium on 03/17/07 at 16:09:42

the %_brb doesnt work for me, can someone tell me y?

# by adium on 03/17/07 at 16:18:33

i downloaded the new version
it still doesnt work

# by adium on 03/18/07 at 19:57:49

i think u should make them change slower, i use use it as my away mesage, and it changes to fast, i think (if u can) u should slow it down

# by iNemo on 03/18/07 at 20:25:04

Adium chooses the time that it changes, I just return a reason everytime adium calls my script. I think adium calls it every minute when its used in an away message or a name.

# by lightxs on 03/31/07 at 20:18:54

I've downloaded like, a million Adium Scripts, but this one's my favourite!!

# by HuoMaKe on 04/01/07 at 04:27:28

I posted an Xtra based off of this called RandomBashQuote, it takes quotes from (after I put them in the code) and disblays them on command. Find it here:

Anyone willing to spend some time finding and formatting quotes would be much appreciated :) download the code and the format is essentially the same as /brb. Be sure to comment on the RBQ page with your code!

# by tasmanian_devil on 05/18/07 at 21:00:59

Um dude could u like make some of them more appropriate, I was talking to my dad and he saw the pin holes in the condum one and he was like wtf? so yeah.. could u? ty

^^ Some Random Person

# by iNemo on 05/19/07 at 09:53:19

One of the features of V1 will be the ability to edit the reasons through a GUI, which includes enabling/disabling reasons. Hopefully be released sometime during late summer (Work permitting!)

# by Jecmu on 06/12/07 at 12:17:23

"brb - I've become ethereal"

This is a great script besides that :-D

"I have to go lick the wet-paint benches in the park", ¬
"Mistook battery acid for orange juice again.", ¬
"Didn't know my sister was that flammable", ¬
"My pet canaries are plotting revolution again.", ¬

i cant figure out how to change the script

# by jjessica147 on 01/08/08 at 12:20:02

Just to let you know, You spelled "chihuahua" wrong in "My Chiwawa has broken free and is eating kitchen knives" I know alot of people spell it chiwawa, but i was just wondering if you knew of this.

# by iNemo on 01/08/08 at 12:41:47

That one was actually added when brb was just a personal script for myself. A private joke between me and a couple of friends is to call chihuahua's chowchows, and when I cleaned the script up to release it I just changed it to Chiwawa without thinking to check the spelling of it. I shall update it to the correct spelling for v1.

# by jjessica147 on 01/08/08 at 12:22:35

Oh and BTW, are these all meant for MEN???? Because i tested one out on my friend, and it said "brushing teeth, chick was a dude".........okay well i am a girl, and im not lesbian.....and i was supposedly making out with a chick??? wtf like now she thinks im lesbian lol. Pleaaaaase can you make like a BRB for girls and a BRB for men!!?!!!?

# by iNemo on 01/08/08 at 12:40:13

v1 is basically a major rewrite in the way brb works, and brings with it the possibility of preferences. So I shall add to it the option of having all gender based lines translated across to being female orientated replies as a personal preference :)

# by W0utR on 01/27/08 at 00:01:25

ty, i realy like this one

# by W0utR on 01/27/08 at 00:02:47

Add 2 a day or something and then add what you have to each release :) would have many then :)
